America’s Army Map Canyon
May 2008 - September 2008
Overview
The America’s Army Project was a summer internship organized between the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College and the America’s Army development team. The goal was to successfully complete a multiplayer map using the America’s Army version of Unreal 2.5 and be officially released through the America’s Army deploy client. Release was 100% dependant on the quality of the map and there were no guarantees of release. Two teams of Champlain students were hired to create two maps.
My Role
Although everyone on the team worked as Level Designers, my main role came from designing the Lighting and populating the environment. I also developed some of the first level concepts for Canyon, before we started building in Unreal.
I handled most items placed within the environment, both in interior environment and exterior. I had to give a lot of thought as to what pieces should go where, to make Canyon feel as lived in as possible. I also took a leading role in developing to overall look of Canyon and it’s artistic style.
Outcome
Canyon was released on December 12, 2008 through the Official America’s Army deploy client. It currently has 13, 823 play hours logged on AAOTracker.com and is the much preferred map of this release.
